No matter who you are, you can find data science everywhere. Because once you start learning about what data science is and all of the opportunities that come with it, you will begin to recognize it in your everyday life. In this post, I will be providing you with some real-life applications of data science.
To start, imagine a time when you saw an advertisement on a social media platform for something you've been looking for. Well, that's thanks to algorithms that analyze what you engage with. Those same algorithms serve you with what you're looking for. Digital ad placement is one of the most common forms of data science. Also, another common form of data science (especially in today's day and age)
would be predicting disease outbreaks. Said predictions would be made with statistics on the contagiousness of a disease. So, using data science, the
future effects of a disease can be visualized. One more common form would be menstruation cycle tracking apps. Apps like Clue or MyFLO use the data of someone's cycle to give them predictions on when their period might begin and
end and more information about one's reproductive health.
In addition to applications of data science in healthcare and e-commerce, sports use data science all the time. For instance, when teams are recruiting athletes for the following season, they analyze statistics on the performance of different athletes to decide who would be the best fit for their team. Some teams may also use data on the performance of their opposing teams as a whole to come up with the best strategies to increase their chances of winning. Lastly, on the flip side of sports, dating apps like Tinder and Bumble use data science to pair people up for dates. The algorithms that connect people based on their data (their interests, career, looks, personality traits, etc.) is an example of data science in full effect.
While some of these examples may be obvious, all I hope is that they help you start to see data science in different forms every day. The importance of recognizing data science is simply to emphasize how helpful it is. All in all, the overwhelming prevalence of data science will hopefully convey how much it should be valued.
