Coding Languages

In computer science, there are several different coding languages used for distinct things. On a more abstract level, you can use block coding. But the more advanced options include Java and Python coding. In this post, I’ll be giving an overview of those three coding languages.

First, block coding. Block coding is definitely the easiest type of coding and is perfect for beginners. It is not used by people like data scientists, who are proficient in much higher level languages. I have the most experience with this language as it is what we used in Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles. We used a program called MIT App Inventor, where we used pre-programmed blocks of code to create apps. In this app, you can drag blocks together to create programs. Block coding is a great way to visualize the basics of computer science and gain an understanding of the different commands in coding languages.

Next, Java is also very popular. It is a higher level programming language where you write the code instead of using blocks. Java is probably what most people think of when they hear computer science. Lines and lines of code used to program software and applications is what typically comes to mind. In general, Java is primarily used in web development.

Finally, Python coding is an incredible language to understand. I have a little experience with Python as I did a week long camp learning some of the basics in Python. It is similar to Java at a quick glance, but they have major differences when you take a closer look. Also, Python is what is used by data scientists. But there is still a great variety of uses for Python including building websites, data analysis, constructing software, and more. Although Java and Python are incredibly similar, Python is more general which makes it much more useful for more people.

In conclusion, those were only some of the many ways that computer scientists code. Blocks, Java, and Python are important languages for many different people. Hopefully you now have a better understanding of some of the basic programming languages used today.
